Director Job Posting

The Children’s School of Science (CSS), located in Woods Hole, MA, is seeking a Director of its educational program. The Children’s School of Science, founded in 1903, provides students ages 7-16 with hands on science education over six weeks in the summer (typically beginning at the very end of June/early July). CSS offers about 30 classes in two three-week sessions, serving roughly 400 students each summer. Our student body comes from Woods Hole, Falmouth, and from many States and foreign countries.

CSS encourages a love and appreciation of science through inquiry-based learning. Frequent field trips and hands-on classroom study provide the opportunity to explore nature, become adept at observation, and discover the rules that govern natural processes. Students benefit from the renowned scientific institutions in Woods Hole and the unique living classroom created by the complex biology and geology of Cape Cod.

The Director is the chief administrator of CSS and is accountable for day-to-day management of the faculty and staff and the safe and efficient operation of the school. The Director promotes the philosophy and mission of CSS to parents, volunteers, and the larger community. The Director also maintains and enhances, when possible, CSS relationships with nearby scientific institutions and benefactors. The Director consults on a regular basis with an Assistant Director, curriculum coordinators, and volunteers. The Director reports to the CSS Board of Directors.

The Director is a year-round position, with different duties relating to the season. When school is in-session, the Director is responsible for overall on-site operations and is expected to serve on a full-time basis. When school is out-of-session, the Director works on a part-time basis, and oversees school registration and planning, with most duties occurring in the late winter and spring.
